In ancient times, people lived in a struggle to survive everyday. There was nothing to make life easier—no technology, no tools, just instinct. There was also little to protect them from diseases—no medicine, no hospitals, just instinct, once again. Today, there are already technologies that make life easier, medical supplies to cure all types of pain and ease every little discomfort you may feel. But, many are still unhealthy and many still suffer from diseases. Healthy living is still elusive. One problem is that there are already too much at present such that most people no longer have to exert efforts to do their daily tasks. There are more cars, for instance, so many individuals seldom walk long distances anymore. Whereas the problem in the past was lack, the problem in the present is over-abundance. Whereas people die of lack in the past (think of malnutrition and famine), many people today die of hypertension and heart problems associated with excess (think of foods excessive in fats and cholesterol). The Components of Good HealthMany people are in a search of a healthy living, but what is really the component of good health? How do you achieve overall well-being and a healthy life? When you closely look at the concept of health, you will find out that it all boils down to the following three concepts: •    Proper Nutrients. Whereas you will already find a lot of health pills, diet capsules, and all other artificial medicines formulated to promote health today, it’s important to know that the best means to getting healthy is still the basic—fresh fruits and fresh vegetables and natural foods rich in vitamins and minerals. No health pills can ever be better than these. •    Balance. Another key to getting healthy is a balanced lifestyle. It’s not all about food, nor is it all about exercise. It’s a balance of both. Include fruits and vegetables in all your meals, plus meat and fish every now and then. Get your daily dose of protein, iron, zinc, and other vitamins. Exercise regularly. You don’t even need to go to the gym to do this—doing your household chores and going on daily walks is already a form of exercise. •    Proper pace. Being healthy is not all about getting exercise as often as you can or eating as much nutritious food as you can handle. You can’t force it to happen at once. The proper step toward good health is one of consistency and steadiness—just the right amount of food and exercise regularly. It takes a lot of discipline to maintain a consistent routine and a great patience to wait for the result. But at the right pace, you’ll surely arrive at your destination more fulfilled. By keeping these three components in mind and by making them your starting guide, it would be easy to find the right direction toward good health. And when you finally achieve a healthy living, you’ll realize that the benefits are all worth your effort and time.

Obesity, deadly diseases like heart failure and cancer, reduced life span—all of these have brought about a growing awareness on the importance of health in the life of every individual. And with more and more people today seeking to enjoy a healthy living and achieve overall well-being, the modern society is seeing a preoccupation with health-promising products—from health pills to diet programs.Side by side all these developments in the area of health is the development of modern technologies designed to make life easier for many people. Almost all televisions, for instance, are already controlled by remote. And whereas you had to go to the market and cook your meals to enjoy good food in the past, all you have to do now is visit fast food chains and everything is already there—from soup to dessert. These are good, yes, but all these have also proven to have their share of health risks for many people, no wonder there are still a lot of individuals living an unhealthy life despite the clamor for good health.Good Health DefinedSo what should you do? Where should you position yourself amid all these? Well, when it comes to healthy living, there are some basic concepts you should remember. Here are three:1.    Good health is all about living a balanced life. It doesn’t revolve around losing weight alone. It’s not just all about getting your desired vital statistics or your desired body shape. Oftentimes, these are just but simple side effects when you strive toward living a healthy life. Good health involves a lot more. It’s all about your overall well-being: body, heart, mind, and spirit. The goal is to enjoy a longer life with no or less illness, and a full and a meaning one at that.2.    The primary components of good health are natural diet and exercise. When it comes to being healthy, the basic is still the best—fruits and vegetables, coupled with daily physical activities. Despite the growing popularity of artificial diet and the complexities of weight loss pills, nothing beats the original, all-natural way to getting your desired health. All you need is to eat more rawfoods and more green produce, plus a daily walk, and you’re on your way to a healthy life.3.    You can’t rush it. Achieving good health can’t be done like a miracle—it doesn’t come all at once. So, don’t push yourself too hard. Don’t be in a hurry. You have to work for it in a slow but steady process. Discipline and consistency are the key. Eat healthy meals. Curb your cravings for unhealthy foods. Exercise regularly. In time, you’ll get there and all your efforts won’t go to waste.Pursuing a healthy life may seem like a huge and a daunting task when you’re just starting. And, it can also get confusing with all the various distracting advertisements and propaganda about health. But, by looking back to the basic of good health, by following the simple concepts above, it won’t be difficult to enjoy healthy living.

It’s easy to define a healthy individual. It’s someone who is physically and mentally fit, someone who doesn’t get sick often, and someone who enjoys a good life. And yet, no matter how easy it is to recognize someone who’s healthy, getting into that stage of living—the healthy stage—is not too easy. Many are in search of a healthy living, and there are also many products claiming to give just that. There are diet pills, diet programs, weight loss, and all the solutions to every other health-related problem you can think of. But despite the abundance of products claiming to be the road to a healthier living and overall well-being, why is obesity still a big problem? Why are there many people who still suffer from serious illnesses like cancer and stroke? The Road to Good Health The answer to the questions above is this: various misconceptions and lack of understanding about health. Many people only have a vague idea of health, while others have a distorted view of the subject. And with the loads of information that individuals are bombarded with everyday, it’s easy to be confused. Therefore, everybody must have the ability to sort out all the information available. What is a healthy living and what is it not? What is the best means to get there? •    A healthy life is not focused on a single aspect of health alone, like weight loss; it is all about overall balance. Many people think that being healthy means losing weight. That if you’ve got a great and sexy body, you’re healthy. That the lower your weight is, the better. It’s no wonder weight loss pills and diet programs are very in demand today. But, the fact is, healthy is not equal to losing weight. Being healthy is much more than that. To be healthy means to stay within the right range of weight according to your age. It means overall well-being—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.•    A healthy life isn’t all about getting there faster; it’s all about getting there slowly but surely. Many people want things easily and fast, so they often resort to health pills that promise results in as early as a few weeks. But sadly, it doesn’t work that way. If you want real health, you have to maintain a steady and consistent method—regular exercise and healthy meals everyday. You have to maintain self-discipline. You might not get there at once, but you will get better results in the end.•    A healthy life isn’t all about artificial medicine; it’s all about the basic—all natural rawfoods and physical activity. Nothing beats eating fresh fruits and vegetables, plus regular exercise (even a daily walk will do), to achieving good health—not any miracle pill and not the best artificial health tablet you can find. After all, most over-the-counter diet pills are only food supplements, not food substitutes. So, if you want to enjoy a healthy living, separate the facts from the misleading information. By knowing what’s really important when it comes to good health, you should have no problem getting there.

Did you know that whole grains can cut the inflammatory disease risk?
Researchers in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in June 2007 found that people who eat proper amounts of whole grains are less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory conditions, which certainly is a good healthy living concept.
Researchers say that those who ate at least four to seven servings of whole grains per week were 35 per cent less likely to die of an inflammatory disorder than those who rarely or never ate them. This study was done on 27,300 postmenopausal women for 17 years. This is great news!
According to the Canada Food Guide, which emphasizes the use of whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, vegetables, dried beans, peas and lentils, fibre is found in plant foods. Canada Food Guide says that there is no fibre in foods of animal origin.
The average Canadian diet allows us about 15 grams of fiber per day. Researchers say that, as adults, we are to double that current intake to 30 grams of fiber per day.
By eating a fibrous diet as a lifelong healthy eating venture, this way of eating helps in the prevention and treatment of a variety of health ails, such as diverticular disease (www.wikipedia.com), constipation, polyps in rectal area, heart disease, hiatus hernia, obesity and some forms of cancer.
In order to stay with the High Fibre Recommendations:
* Obtain fibre from a variety of different foods; all foods contain different amounts of fibre.
* Use “whole grain” breads, muffins, bagels and try for at least five servings per day.
* Choose “vegetables and fruit” more often, especially when it comes to dessert time. The fruit is best if eaten raw, but can be eaten both cooked and raw, and try to eat the skin as well, as it contains much of the fibre.
* For your dried beans, peas and lentils, put in soups, casseroles and salads for your soluble fibre. Lentils make a wonderful soup and salads are marvelous with feta cheese and olives. Be creative.
* Increase the fibre in your healthy eating gradually to avoid bloating, gas and any digestive upsets.
* Always remember to drink plenty of fluids per day – aim for 6 to 8 cups, which includes milk, juice, water, clear teas. Caffeine does not count as it draws fluids from the body. Drinking your fluids will help with your digestion and bowel regularity as well.
* Exercise regularly as it will help you to have regular bowel habits.
* Always read labels for fibre content on foods if possible. Check your cookbooks, and make yourself a guru on fibre rich goods. As an idea 3 grams fibre per 1/2 cup serving of recommend fibre rich foods.
We have used the Canadian Health Guide as a ruling; in fact, the American Food Guide would be similar. Make it a point of finding out all the foods that contain fibre, separate the lists into grains, fruits, vegetables, add your liquids to the list and tack it onto your refrigerator as a reminder of how to eat, amounts and servings, and help yourself into high fibre for your healthy living.

Golden colored fruits are a treasure trove of tasty benefits to healthy living. These fruits are packed full of vitamins and fiber, and notably, are low in fat and calories.
Eating papaya is like “having your cake and eating it too.” Papaya is the tropical fruit which has a soft buttery like consistency when ripe. Eat healthy ripe papaya as you would melon, cutting lengthwise, scooping out the seeds, then eating with a spoon. Just half a papaya contains twice the RDI requirements of vitamin C we need and is very rich in beta carotene.
Nectarines are ready to eat when they have a deep yellow golden skin with lots of red on it. Nectarines should be slightly soft at the seam. This little gem, when ripe, should have a sweet aroma. These treasures can be eaten with the skin on and have a zingy, fresh taste. Nectarine’s can be chopped and added to salad, served with meats, or eaten on their own. Nectarines healthy bonus is fiber and Vitamin C. A favorite fruit because of its portability, nectarines can be used as a healthy snack several times a day.
Cantaloupe is known for its refreshing flavor, and juicy texture. It is a melon that has an earthy aroma. Cantaloupe should be picked by heaviness for its size, and there should be no soft spots on it. Note: cantaloupes should be washed on the outside with a vegetable & fruit washer to fully cleanse the outside before cutting up, as they can carry bacteria on them. Once cleaned, scoop the seeds and middle out of the fruit. Healthy cantaloupes are wonderful with any meal and can be cut up into balls with a special cantaloupe scoop, or cut in halves and sliced into neat pieces, or peel the outside and just chop into smaller squares. Cantaloupe can be pureed and made into a summer drink by adding soda water topped with mint. Cantaloupe has many healthy benefits; vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium, plus fiber content is high.
Oranges are a favorite for almost everyone. This little treasure comes in many varieties, mandarin, Chinese, and of course, naval oranges, full of intense citrus tasty flavor. There is nothing more refreshing and healthy than eating an orange, or having a fresh glass of orange juice in the morning, which is like a little bit of “heaven”.
Orange juice is used in many alcoholic drinks, such as vodka and orange, champagne and orange juice, often for brunch. Use oranges for healthy recipes; the rind puts zest in flavoring muffins, loaves, cookies, blender beverages and a host of main dish baking, such as chicken recipes, and salads.
Our treasure box is now full of golden fruits; why not use these little treasures to tantalize your taste buds, and reap the healthy benefits as well? Papayas, nectarines, cantaloupe and oranges are our natural treasures that give us a wealth of vitamins, fiber, and refreshing flavors for benefits of healthy living.
